The Maldives – Traditional Garudhiya (Fish Soup)

Garudhiya is one of the famous and traditional dishes of Maldives. Garudhiya is a fragrant fish soup with some kind of spices and vegetables in it. This is so famous in winters. This dish warms up your body and gives you strength. The taste is so appetizing and the aroma is so good that makes you drool. All the people should try this once in their life. The texture of fish is soft and juicy and the texture of the soup is so thin. This soup is served with rice. You can add the soup at the top of the rice and then you can enjoy this tempting dish. This dish is made by adding water, fish, spices, vegetables, and lemon to it. The very important part of the dish is to add lemon to it because the lemon adds a unique flavor to it. The soup has spices in it so the lemon adds a tangy twist to it. It goes very well with other components of the dish. You can serve this with:

  • Boiled rice
  • fries rice
  • onion rice
  • vegetable rice
  • salty rice
  • bread
  • coconut rice

You can find this anywhere in the Maldives in winter. This dish is a specialty in winters. People enjoy this at street vendors. They sell this soup, late knight. People wait in lines for so long to buy the soup. Some people like to have this as breakfast or lunch. You can have this goodness at any time. This is one of the yummiest and popular dishes of the Maldives. Some people like to add coconut to it. If you are a fan of coconut yu can add coconut to the soup.

Ingredients of the soup

  • 1 medium fillet (1-inch cubes)
  • 1 small onion (chopped)
  • 1tsp garlic paste
  • 1 tsp. ginger paste
  • 2 tbsp. scallions
  • 1.5-liter water
  • 1 tsp. black pepper
  • 5 tbsp. lemon juice
  • 4 tbsp oil

Cooking

Take a cooking pot and the water in it and let it boil for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes add fish to the pot and cover the lid for 15 minutes. Take a pan and add oil and onions in it and then sauté it for 15 minutes until onions are caramelized and soft.

Now add ginger and garlic paste in the pan and again sauté it for 10 minutes. Now add this onion mixture to the boiling water pot and mix well until all the things are fully combined. Now add black pepper and lemon juice in it and again mix well and cover the lid.

Now take a bowl and pour some soup n it and top with some scallions and serve with some rice.
