Japan – Mochi (Japanese Rice Cake)

MOCHI, RICE CAKE or Japanese rice mochi cake is the dish which has many names and tastes amazing. Mochi is the type of starch that is used in making this rice cake. This dish is eaten around the whole year but especially on new year’s eve and served as the Japanese traditional dessert.

Japan – Zosui / Ojiya

This dish is actually a soup which is made up of rice, vegetables, and meat. It is also known as ”Japanese Rice Soup”. This soup is originated from the concept that rice can be added to miso soup for a more tasty and healthy effect. There are few varieties of zosui by different ingredients to put on and different cooking time.

Japan – Yoshinoya Beef Rice Bowl (Gyudon)

This dish is a proper bowl of all elements like strips of beef with steamed rice and topped with vegetables with sometimes a fried egg. This is said as Japanese comfort food for at least 150 years. Gyudon is originally originated from the dish Gyunbae. This dish is Beef hot pot at the times of KANTO REGION, in Japan.

Japan – Takikomi Gohan

Takikomi Gohan is a bowl of Japanese rice tossed with dashi, soya sauce, broth, and can have the addition of vegetables and meat into it. This dish has a lot of varieties and different versions of the same dish by having different combinations of vegetables and meat. It can be your comfort dish or a heavy meal to be served on dinners, festivals like Japanese new year’s eve, etc.

Japan – Melonpan

Sweet bun soft inside covered with crispy-crunchy cookie dough is the best thing for a snack as a biscuit, like a cookie, as a bun. This is known as melonpan because of having the same shape like melon. This is more like a bun in texture but having many flavors to be added on to give exotic flavors and new tastes. There are various types of the melonpan bun with different fillings and stuffing added.

Japan – Chinmi: Salt-pickled Mullet Roe/ Kusaya

This is a Japanese delicacy and is supposed to be the rare and expensive food of Japan. It is Pickled seafood by adding preservatives. To name this delicacy, there is a common sentence used as ”THREE CHINMI OF JAPAN”: Kusaya(くさや), Funazushi (鮒寿司) and Kurozukuri(黒作り). The history of Japanese cuisine revolved around the main three ERA: KOFUN PERIOD from 3rd to 7th centuries followed by Yamato dynasty, and then the New Periods.

Japan – Makizushi Rolls

Makizushi is Japanese rolled sushi. This is formed by rolling a cylindrical roll of sushi then cut into a plain patty-like round shaped. This is rolled by using bamboo mats. There are many variations in which form the fish would be presented like mostly uncooked thin-sliced fish are embedded in it.

Japan – Mixed Vegetable Tsukemono

This is Japanese vegetable pickle use to add to different Japanese dishes and consume in many snacks like sandwiches, salads, etc. This is the thing that can make any other dish to the next level. This is a very common dish of KAISEKI, a traditional multi-course Japanese dinner. This is more like the Name means ”PICKLED THINGS”. In 1906, a book of tea written by Okakura Kakuzō also known as Okakura Tenshin was a Japanese scholar and he introduced this dish, Tsukemono in the great tea ceremony, Kaiseki. There are many varieties of tsukemono prepared in Japanese cuisine and also there are many different dishes cooked by using this individual dish, tsukemono.

Japan – Nikujaga (Japanese Beef Potatoes)

Nikujaga is actually a stew dish and, it has two basic elements, beef, and potatoes. This dish is said to be the fusion dish of western and Japanese styles together. Nikujaga is most popular especially in Winters when served with hot soups and rice. In the 19th century, this dish was invented by a chef of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Chef Norman Van Aken used the word FUSION CUISINE. This was the first time used a word for cuisine. Japanese cuisine has a number of dishes that are formed by the impact of other cuisines especially CHINESE CUISINE and WESTERN CUISINE.

Japan – Soba Noodles

It is the tradition of Japan to serve and eat soba noodles on Japanese new year’s eve. People think that eating this dish will have to wait till next new year’s eve. So the name of the dish is called TOSHIKOSHI SOBA means AFTER A YEAR.
