The United Arab Emirates – Challah

Challah is a bread that is from the Eastern side of the European Origin. The term ”CHALLAH” is meant to be the kind of Bread and Cake. This bread is also known as ”SHABBAT BREAD”. Because on the Jewish festival Shabbat this bread is made and then serve to the Jewish members after prayer. The most traditional way to cook challah is from the plain wheat flour, eggs, salt, yeast, vegetable oil, sugar, and water to knead. There is much bread made up of similar ingredients but having some varieties and differences in shapes.

Bahrain – Zalabia / Zalbia

Bahrain has a mixture of cultures from Arabic, Indian, Persian, Balochi, and European. This dish is a dessert or sweet dish and is very unique in taste and shape. The name Zalbia comes from the BEJA, TUNISIA, a city known as ZLABA. Tunisia people claimed that Abdurrahman Ibnou Nafaâ Ziriab, an Iranian Musician originated the dish and introduced to them. JALEBI is an Indian or Pakistani name for this same dish.

Syria – Pistachio Tahini Halvah

Halva is a dessert that can be cooked by adding different main ingredients like nuts, fruits, semolina, flour, grains, etc. This dish is very popular in WEST ASIA. In Syria, halwa is cooked usually grains based. This dish is said to be the confectionary food item. It is basically a dessert or sweet dish for confections. Halvah is a dish that originated from Persian cuisine. It is a very old and traditional dish from the 7th century. In the Arabic language, Halwa means SWEET CONFECTION.

United Arab Emirates – Lamb Maqluba (Upside Down Lamb Rice Dish)

MAQLUBA literary means ”UPSIDE DOWN”. When this dish is cooked, It is layered in the pot like rice layer, meat layer and vegetables. Name of the dish is also seen in the book, named KITAB AL TABIKH. It is a book of 13th century recipes of UAE. Emirati dishes are very royal dishes because the use of the ingredients are very nutritious and rich.

United Arab Emirates – Om Ali

This is a dessert that originated from Egypt, but popular in the whole UAE. The word OM ALI is derived from the meaning ”MOTHER OF ALI”. This name is given after the wife of Ruler of ”AYYUBID EMPIRE”. MOTHER OF ALI is traced from the Era of Ayyubid Empire. Khumaimaa is the dish that is similar to the OM ALI. It is originated from Iran and Jordan and is a part of its national cuisine.
